Key Highlights:
- Galaxy closes $175M fund to back crypto startups
- Focus on DeFi, infrastructure, and consumer-facing crypto apps
- Institutional LPs and Galaxy itself contributed to fund
Galaxy Digital has completed a final close of its inaugural external venture fund- Galaxy Ventures Fund I (GVF I). Now locking in more than $175 Million of initial capital commitments, exceeding its initial goal of raising $150 Million.
It is a strategic growth move of Galaxy Ventures that has so far been financed using its balance sheet. The new fund reportedly will be doing early-stage investments in blockchain startups. The areas include critical infrastructure, decentralized finance (DeFi), and consumer crypto solutions.
Galaxy is eyeing investments in different businesses. These include stablecoins, tokenization platforms, payment infrastructure, and performance-optimized Layer 1 and 2 blockchains.
As per reports, Galaxy has already invested 50 million out of an initial closing of 113 million in rising startups. These include Monad, a high-speed blockchain, and Ethena, a synthetic stablecoin yield-bearing supplier since July 2024.
Other portfolio companies backed by Galaxy Ventures are Plume, Arch Lending, Rain, RedotPay, Yellow Card, and 1Money.
Institutional Backing Signals Renewed Confidence in Crypto Venture Capital
A combination of institutional investors, family offices, and crypto-native companies fueled the fund to oversubscription. Galaxy was also a general and limited partner, highlighting the company’s belief in itself.
The crypto VC space saw a drop in deal flow and valuations in 2023 and early 2024. Despite that, Galaxy’s latest funding round shows promise. It signals that LP interest might be returning. Projects with strong infrastructure and real-world use cases are gaining traction.
Galaxy Ventures is led by partners Will Nuelle and Mike Giampapa. They aim to support portfolio companies with funding and strategic access. Their goal is to help startups tap into the broader platform services offered by Galaxy.
This includes resources across infrastructure, research, and market intelligence. These consist of assistance with hiring, advertising, protocol development, and liquidity, providing a bigger depth of runway to startups.
Speaking to one of the crypto media, Giampapa noted: “We’re seeing tailwinds in areas like crypto payments and tokenized assets. The structure of this fund enables us to go deeper with founders solving high-value problems.”
Galaxy’s Broader Vision: Building the Future On-Chain
One of the pillars of Galaxy Digital’s overall plan to build its institutional digital asset presence is Galaxy Ventures Fund I. As of May 2025, Galaxy has under management $7 Billion.
It encompasses its Bitcoin ETF, institutional trading desk, and proprietary mining with offices in San Francisco, Stockholm, and Zurich. The company made $295 Million net loss in Q1 2025. Most of it was caused by the poor performance of the mining department.
Galaxy is shifting its strategy with the launch of GVF I. The firm will now focus more on infrastructure and software, moving away from hardware-heavy ventures. The company also adopts AI-based data centres and tokenization frameworks that align with cross-industry trends.
According to founder and CEO, Mike Novogratz: “We have a rare advantage as investors as well as operators.” Such a fund is evidence of our faith that the second generation of blockchain products will redefine capital markets and consumer finance.”
Web3 Maturity and Investment Trends
GVF I’s success will go beyond financial returns. It will be measured by how it accelerates the growth of Web3 startups. This approach focuses on long-term impact, not quick profits. Galaxy’s $175 million raise is among the biggest early-stage blockchain funds in 2025.
That number alone signals renewed confidence in blockchain infrastructure. Investors are now backing projects with real-world applications. Strategic capital is flowing into mature blockchain ecosystems. It’s a shift from speculation to substance.
