Adam Back Advocates For Bitcoin ‘Cryptographic Fungibility’

Key Insights:

  • Adam Back claims that cryptographic fungibility can enhance Bitcoin technology
  • Harvard Professor takes back his earlier bearish forecast
  • BTC price faces a correction ahead of the Federal Reserve’s July meeting release

Adam Back, a Satoshi ally and cypherpunk, is advocating for the inclusion of more cryptographic fungibility in the Bitcoin technology.

While this would make censorship or filtering nearly impossible, it also raises tradeoffs, particularly around spam and network abuse.

Bitcoin Tech and New Demand

Adam Back noted that the Bitcoin technology could advance toward a system with enhanced cryptographic fungibility, potentially resembling a cryptographic accumulator. This implies a shift toward unfiltered data known as “blobs.”

He explained that as Bitcoin adopts stronger cryptographic privacy features, it becomes a system where censorship is impossible.

Currently, Bitcoin has partial fungibility, as transactions can be traced on the public blockchain, potentially revealing patterns or identities.

However, with advanced cryptographic techniques, Bitcoin transactions could become fully fungible by omitting sender, receiver, and amount details.

While technically feasible, the same features that enable privacy can make spam mitigation nearly impossible.

Current anti-spam measures rely on transaction fees and block size limits, but these assume some ability to identify or prioritize transactions.

If all transactions are indistinguishable blobs, filtering spam becomes impossible, as it would become difficult to differentiate legitimate transactions from spam.

Overall, Adam Back believes better fungibility is highly desirable. While he admitted that users can lose the limited positive effects of selective filtering, he thinks fungibility is the way forward.

Musings of a Bitcoin Critic and Professor

Beyond the technology, there have been recent discussions about Bitcoin’s achievements and projections.

Taking to the X platform, Harvard Professor Kenneth Rogoff talked about his earlier Bitcoin (BTC) price prediction.

In March 2018, Professor Rogoff forecasted that BTC would likely fall to $100 rather than rise to $100,000.

He argued at the time that Bitcoin had minimal usage as a transaction vehicle, without the possibility of money laundering and tax evasion. Rogoff also stressed that government regulation would be a trigger for the drop in BTC prices.

Now, with BTC climbing as high as $124,000 in 2025, Rogoff has admitted that he misjudged Bitcoin’s potential.

He noted that his error stemmed from overestimating U.S. regulatory control to crack down on tax evasion and illegal activities.

Rogoff also admitted that he did not appreciate how Bitcoin would compete with fiat currencies in the $20 trillion global underground economy, a demand that now supports a price floor.

Finally, Rogoff said he did not anticipate a situation where regulators, including the U.S. President, would hold cryptocurrencies worth millions of dollars.

Indeed, Bitcoin and the overall crypto market took a major leap after US President Donald Trump resumed his second term in the White House.

In June, President Trump disclosed $57.4 million in income tied to his involvement with World Liberty Financial (WLFI).

Furthermore, Trump signed an executive order for the U.S. to create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

Recently, U.S Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated that the government would fund the strategic reserve through Bitcoin seizures.

BTC Market Outlook

The price of Bitcoin is currently experiencing volatility amid a broader market downturn. The leading coin, which hit a high of $124,000 a few days prior, is now struggling around $113,000.

As of this writing, the BTC price has plummeted 1.2% over the previous day to trade at $113,686. The leading coin is also down 6.5% weekly and 4.2% over the past month.

The ongoing decline in BTC price comes as investors await the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes from July.

The Fed is scheduled to release minutes from its July 29-30 policy meeting later today, signalling the path of monetary policy.

Amid the latest market correction, analysts have predicted a bullish breakout for BTC soon.
