The S&P 500 Index and its tracking ETFs, including SPDR’s SPY and Vanguard’s VOO, extended their rally Monday. Investors awaited earnings from most of the Magnificent 7 companies. The index hit a record high of 6,790, up 40% since April’s low.
S&P 500 Index Soars Ahead of Magnificent 7 Earnings
One of the top catalysts for the blue-chip S&P 500 index this week will be the financial results of most members of the Magnificent 7 group of companies. Microsoft, Google, and Meta Platforms will publish their numbers on Wednesday, while Apple and Amazon will do so on Thursday.
These are all notable numbers as the five companies have a combined market capitalization of over $15 trillion, which is about 26% of the S&P 500 Index. Most importantly, the firms are involved in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, which has helped to drive the stock market.
Additionally, companies such as Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Google, and Amazon are Nvidia’s largest customers, accounting for nearly 50%.
Therefore, strong financial results by all these companies will either propel the S&P 500 Index higher or lower. For example, signs that firms like Microsoft and Meta are starting to reduce their AI spending will push the S&P 500 Index lower.
On the other hand, signs that they are still increasing their spending will be highly bullish for the market, as it will alleviate concerns about an AI bubble.
Analysts are optimistic that these magnificent 7 companies will publish strong financial results this week. Data compiled by Yahoo Finance indicates that the average analyst estimate is that Microsoft’s revenue will be $75.3 billion, representing a 14.95% increase from the same period last year. Its earnings-per-share is expected to be $3.65, up from the previous $3.3.
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is expected to generate $50 billion in revenue, representing a 21% year-over-year increase.
Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision and US-China Deal
The other notable catalyst for the S&P 500 Index this week will be the upcoming Federal Reserve interest rate decision.
Economists and traders on prediction platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi believe that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates by 0.25% in this meeting. This also explains why US bond yields have pulled back in recent days.
The probability of rate cuts rose after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released new Consumer Price Index data Friday. The report showed headline CPI at 3.0%, below the median forecast of 3.1%.
The S&P 500 Index also advanced after U.S. and Chinese negotiators reached a preliminary trade deal. The agreement will be signed by President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in South Korea.
S&P 500 Index Technical Analysis
The daily timeframe chart indicates that the S&P 500 Index has been in a strong uptrend over the past few months, having moved from a low of $4,828 in April to its current level of $6,800.
It has moved above the important resistance level at $6,763, its highest point in October, invalidating the forming double-top pattern.
The index remains above the 50-day and 100-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMA), which have provided it with substantial support in the past few months.

Therefore, the most likely forecast for the S&P 500 and VOO ETF is bullish, with the next key resistance level at $7,000, approximately 3.1% above the current level. This rally will depend on the upcoming earnings of the Magnificent 7, the Federal Reserve, and trade developments.
