PNC introduced a direct Bitcoin trading feature for eligible PNC Private Bank clients, marking a milestone for the US banking sector. The move positions PNC as the first major bank in the country to provide spot Bitcoin access through its own digital platform.
The launch reflects demand among investors seeking managed entry into the digital asset market through established financial institutions.
PNC Introduces Direct Bitcoin Trading for Private Bank Clients
PNC announced the rollout of direct spot Bitcoin trading for qualifying PNC Private Bank clients, forming a new chapter in its digital asset strategy. The feature allows clients to buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin on PNC’s digital banking platform. This gives them an option previously unavailable at major US banks.
The institution confirmed that only eligible private banking clients can access the new functionality in this initial phase.
Moreover, the offering utilizes Coinbase’s Crypto-as-a-Service (CaaS) infrastructure, which provides trading, custody, and related operational services.
PNC’s integration enables clients to view and manage Bitcoin positions through Portfolio View on the PNC Private Bank Online platform.

The bank stated that the move aligns with growing client interest in accessing digital assets through established financial channels under familiar account oversight.
PNC operates more than 100 PNC Private Bank offices serving high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and business owners. The bank will position clients to engage with the digital asset market through a controlled environment supported by internal compliance.
Executives noted that the institution has a responsibility to provide secure pathways to emerging asset classes when client usage trends indicate rising demand.
PNC chief executive William S. Demchak said the bank’s cooperation with Coinbase allows clients to use Bitcoin trading through a platform that mirrors PNC’s service standards. He added that direct trading access is structured to operate within clients’ financial planning needs.
Partnership with Coinbase Expands Access
Coinbase’s CaaS technology gives PNC a system for executing and storing digital assets. The platform offers institutional-grade custody, order routing, and settlement capabilities, enabling banks to integrate crypto services without building their own infrastructure.
Coinbase stated that the arrangement demonstrates how banking institutions and on-chain service providers can collaborate within existing regulatory frameworks.
Brett Tejpaul, co-CEO of Coinbase Institutional, stated that PNC adopted a measured approach when structuring the partnership. He noted that the infrastructure is trusted by institutions in global markets and is designed to operate under established compliance controls.
Also, Coinbase’s recent market performance and corporate activity have brought attention to the institution. The exchange has a market capitalization of approximately $74 billion and reported 47% revenue growth over the past 12 months. Analysts have assigned price targets up to $510 for Coinbase shares.
PNC Bank Plan Phased Expansion
On the other hand, PNC Bank confirmed that the initial rollout will serve a limited segment of its private banking clients. Additional client groups will gain access once further development stages are complete. Future phases include expanding features within the digital platform, adding additional asset capabilities, or integrating the platform more broadly across PNC’s wealth management network.
The service currently focuses on Bitcoin, providing clients with a single-asset entry point that includes regulated trading and custody support. PNC said that it will monitor adoption and usage patterns before expanding the range of available services.
The partnership marks an important step in PNC’s strategic shift toward integrated digital wealth solutions. It also reinforces a broader trend among banks to explore structured digital asset access for clients.
