Key Insights:
- Glassnode reports a $234B altcoin market decline, marking one of the largest drawdowns in history.
- Bitcoin ETFs alter investor behavior, limiting capital rotation into altcoins, notes Miles Deutscher.
- BTC dominance at 60.99% reflects strong inflows, while altcoins face sustained market weakness.
According to Glassnode, in one of the biggest absolute drawdowns in recent history, the altcoin market valuation has dropped $234 Billion over the past two weeks.
This broad-based capitulation highlights continued weakness across the sector, with few assets managing to hold ground.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin remains more resilient. Though BTC investors locked in $520 Million in realized losses—one of the largest of this cycle—this remains far below the $1.3 Billion recorded in the August 2023 yen-carry unwind.

Altcoin Market Drawdown
Glassnode notes that in percentage terms, the altcoin drawdown ranks among the 41 worst in 1,662 trading days.
While severe, it remains in line with major sell-offs in 2024 and is notably less extreme than the May 2021 miner migration and the late 2022 LUNA/3AC collapses.
This suggests that while the decline is substantial, it follows historical patterns of volatility in the crypto market.
At the same time, Bitcoin’s performance reflects its relative strength. Though BTC investors realized significant losses, they remain below levels observed in previous downturns.
This reinforces Bitcoin’s dominance as the primary asset within the crypto sector amid ongoing altcoin market weakness.
Bitcoin ETFs Reshape Market Dynamics
According to crypto analyst Miles Deutscher, Bitcoin ETFs, while bullish for BTC, have contributed to the absence of a 2021-style altcoin season.
Historically, Bitcoin’s four-year halving cycle triggered wealth accumulation, which then rotated into altcoins. Deutscher argues that this cycle is weakening due to structural changes.

Before ETFs, Bitcoin whales who profited from halvings kept their funds on centralized exchanges and reinvested into Ethereum, large caps, and altcoins.
However, the ETF era has changed this, as institutional investors and retail participants now hold Bitcoin through ETFs, which settle in USD rather than crypto.
As a result, profits are less likely to flow into altcoins and more likely to exit into traditional markets like the S&P 500.
Investors who use Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds behave unlike their counterparts in traditional cryptocurrency market.
ETFs changed the traditional behavior of whales since they now handle their BTC earnings through the purchase of ETFs instead of investing in altcoins.
Investors now face indirect exposure to Bitcoin since they trade exchange-traded funds against the United States dollar.
Market liquidity functions have also transformed due to this change, which modified the previous Bitcoin-to-altcoin investment pattern.
Deutscher notes that the traditional flow of funds theory no longer holds. The past Bitcoin, Ethereum, Large Caps, Altcoins cycle has broken down due to ETF-driven investor behavior.
A significant portion of crypto wealth is now on-chain rather than on centralized exchanges. Capital that once fueled altcoin speculation is now engaged in DeFi, staking, and other blockchain-based financial activities.
Bitcoin Dominance Remains High
BTC dominance currently stands at 60.99%, reflecting Bitcoin’s continued strength over altcoins. A recent local top of approximately 62% suggests that BTC still dominates capital inflows.
Technical indicators show a potential shift. The MACD bearish crossover suggests weakening BTC dominance, which could indicate capital rotation.

However, without the traditional wealth effect, this may not flow into altcoins. The RSI at 59.75 indicates a downtrend in BTC dominance, though it remains far from signaling a strong altcoin season.
Ultimately, the current market dynamics indicate that crypto capital fails to maintain cyclic circulation that happened during previous periods.
The existing market conditions enable Bitcoin to gain almost exclusively from institutional adoption instead of allowing altcoins to flourish. Investors now prioritize Bitcoin acquisition while it maintains a growing market dominance.
