Key Insights
- Bitcoin exchange reserves fell to 2.25M BTC, the lowest since 2018.
- Mining hashrate surpasses 800 EH/s, signaling strong network security.
- Futures leverage declines, reducing liquidation risks and volatility.
The market dynamics for Bitcoin are altering as BTC investors extract funds from their exchange accounts and miners extend their operations alongside traders who decrease their leverage positions.
Exchange reserves exist at their lowest level in six years, while mining operations have reached their peak strength and traders hold less leverage on futures trading. Multiple factors may guide Bitcoin toward its upcoming price changes.
Bitcoin Exchange Reserves Fall to 2018 Levels
The reduction of Bitcoin exchange reserves occurs during an investment bull market, which is usually against normal market flow.
Traditionally, price increases lead to rising reserves because traders put BTC into exchange accounts to extract profits.
However, this cycle is different. The current Bitcoin price rise has not led to increased exchange balances reaching their 2018 minimum level.
The data from CryptoQuant demonstrates Bitcoin exchange reserves have decreased from their 2020 total of 3.25 million BTC to the present-day level of 2.25 million BTC.
A substantial decrease in supply occurs when market demand continues to increase. Bitcoin crossed the $50,000 mark as investors began to store their funds in offline storage known as cold storage.

The growing interest of institutions has significantly influenced this market trend. The approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs triggered firms like BlackRock and Fidelity to move their BTC into their self-owned cryptocurrency storage rather than keeping them on exchanges.
Additionally, retail investors have chosen to remove their assets from exchanges since the FTX exchange collapse in 2022 and related security concerns.
The decrease in exchange reserves stems from the behaviour of long-term holders (LTHs). That is, Bitcoin holders who have stored their coins for more than 155 days.
Historically, when bull markets occurred, BTC owners frequently sent their assets to exchanges for deposit. The supply shortage emerges from LTHs refusing to dispose of their holdings.
The upcoming 2028 Bitcoin halving event will increase supply constraints by further reducing new Bitcoin circulation.
When the halving event happens, it will decrease block rewards from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC, reducing how much new Bitcoin gets added to circulation.
A supply squeeze can occur when exchange reserves decrease alongside reduced new supply, which results in elevated prices.
Bitcoin Mining Hashrate Hits Record 600 EH/s
Moving on, Bitcoin mining reached a new record by surpassing 800 EH/s for the first time in history.
The mining hash rate exceeded 800 EH/s starting this year, after its previous level reached 300 EH/s in early 2023.
The dramatic growth of mining computational power demonstrates miners strongly expect the upcoming halving to occur.
The block reward reduction drives miners to intensively expand their operations because they want to achieve higher profits until the reward decreases.
Bitcoin’s rising price above $50,000 enhanced miner profitability. Firms are taking steps to buy new mining rigs and extend their infrastructure in order to maintain their market position.

The mining industry is driven by big companies such as Marathon Digital, Riot Platforms and CleanSpark, who lead the way.
The mining companies obtain affordable electricity contracts while utilizing modern Bitmain Antminer S21 and MicroBT WhatsMiner M60 ASIC miners that use less energy and perform better.
Elevated hashrate levels protect network security because they make it harder to pull off 51% attacks. The surge in competition becomes more intense among miners as the process progresses.
Following the halving, Bitcoin’s mining difficulty will rise so that both minor operations and lower-performing facilities will struggle to maintain profitability.
Bitcoin Futures Leverage Declines, Lowering Volatility Risks
Meanwhile, market stability has improved because Bitcoin futures traders at primary exchanges have decreased leverage limits.
An analysis of CryptoQuant data indicates that credit leverage at Binance, Bitfinex, BitMEX, Bybit, Deribit, Gate, HTX, Kraken, and OKX platforms has experienced a substantial reduction.

The implementation of lower leverage allows traders to protect against large-scale liquidation events since they are taking fewer operational risks.
When traders increase leverage, potential markets exhibit abrupt price movements because increasing numbers of automated liquidations produce intense price effects in both positive and negative directions.
Since leverage has been declining, Bitcoin faces reduced possibilities of substantial price movements in the upcoming months.
The observed price range for Bitcoin stood at $95,000 to $97,000 without substantial impact from changing leverage. Before market events take place, traders appear to reduce their risk exposure while minimizing their market positions.
Bitcoin price will stick within a stable trading zone when leverage remains at a low level. Price volatility will return if leverage reaches high levels once again because liquidations will produce stronger movements in the market.
