Key Insights:
- Whale bets $47M on ETH as price crashes below $1,500.
- DeFi liquidations surge, over $1.1B ETH at risk.
- Ethereum underperforms, loses 54% YTD, ETF outflows intensify.
ETH price is facing renewed pressure as prices revisit levels last seen in 2018. Amid the volatility, a high-leverage whale opened a $47 million long position, defying a broader wave of liquidations, fading ETF inflows, and deepening market skepticism.
Massive Long Bet as Ethereum Slides to $1,448
On Apr. 7, an Ethereum whale opened a $47.59 million long position on Hyperliquid using 20x leverage, according to a dashboard shared by trader Crypto Rover. The position holds 32,875 ETH at an entry price of $1,461.61.

The wallet—address 0x51d99a4022a55cad07a3c958f0600d8bb0b39921—is reportedly linked to a trader known for high-risk entries. At press time, the position shows a $454,076 unrealized loss.
The entry coincided with Ethereum‘s flash crash to $1,448.46 during the Asian market session. Data from CoinMarketCap shows ETH has dropped 16% in the last 24 hours, marking a 54% year-to-date decline.
Whale Activity Surges Despite Bearish Conditions
Crypto Rover also reported that another entity, known in the market as “Seven Siblings,” purchased 24,817 ETH worth $42.2 million during the same dip.
Despite incurring a $64 million loss across multiple positions, the whale continued accumulating. Their wallet now holds over $603 million in ETH, amounting to 98% of their total portfolio.

According to Spot On Chain, this same address had previously bought aggressively during January and February downturns.
ETH Price Faces Institutional Exit, DeFi Liquidations
Ethereum recorded $367 million in liquidations over the past 24 hours, per Coinglass data. A major ETH borrower on Maker was liquidated for 65,570 ETH, after pushing their collateral ratio to 143%.
Another wallet holding 56,995 Wrapped ETH also got liquidated, while one large vault faces a margin call at $1,495. Some whales have tried to escape forced liquidation by repaying loans or adding more ETH, though with limited success.
Decentralized protocols now carry over $1.1 billion in ETH at risk of liquidation, based on liquidation levels tracked by DeFi Llama.

Meanwhile, Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust (ETHE) saw outflows of $31.08 million last week. Ethereum spot ETFs recorded a total outflow of $49.93 million between Mar. 31 and Apr. 4.
The consistent exodus suggests a pullback in institutional confidence as Ethereum struggles to hold support levels.
ETH Price Performance Raises Concerns Over ETH’s Narrative
Ethereum is now trading close to prices last seen in Jan. 2018.
On-chain analyst Willy Woo noted ETH’s internal rate of return (IRR) over the past seven years has fallen to just 1.2%. ETH traded at $1,569 earlier today, just above its 2018 level of $1,448.

Woo argued that Ethereum’s label as “ultrasound money” is eroding as long-term returns falter. His comments add to a growing narrative questioning Ethereum’s role in the current cycle.
The Pectra upgrade, aimed at improving efficiency and scalability, was previously projected for March but has now been delayed to later this month. The delay has not helped sentiment.
Traders Brace for Deeper Losses as Bear Pattern Emerges
Trader BitBull pointed out that ETH is mirroring Bitcoin’s 2022 bear market structure.
“Breakdown, dead cat, channel, then deeper dump—identical script,” BitBull posted on X. According to him, Ethereum and other major altcoins remain in “bear mode” while Bitcoin consolidates.

Liquidation data supports the view that downside risk remains. ETH continues to face pressure from both centralized and decentralized platforms. Panic selling from whales further underscores market fragility.
One example includes Symbolic Capital Markets, which added 38,132 ETH to centralized exchanges late Sunday, likely contributing to the initial leg down.
The large long position on ETH, alongside renewed whale accumulation, shows that some traders still expect a rebound.
But with price losses, ETF outflows, and mounting DeFi liquidations, the backdrop remains hostile. The Ethereum network’s upcoming Pectra upgrade may offer a catalyst, but for now, ETH price remains vulnerable.
