Key Insights:
- Bitcoin price hit $111,970, triggering ETF inflows and institutional momentum Price.
- Short-term holders realized $11.4B profits, creating temporary supply overhang.

Bitcoin’s breakout above $111,000 stoked bullish hopes, but Q3’s bearish track record clouds its future trajectory.
Bitcoin Price Breaks New Ground as ETFs See Billions in Inflows
Bitcoin surged to a record high of $111,970 on May 22, fueling optimism across crypto markets. The rally extended from late April’s momentum, pushing the price as high as $108,839 at press time.

The move came alongside growing institutional interest. According to data from Farside, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded $2.75 billion in inflows for the week ending May 23. Wu Blockchain also noted nine consecutive days of net ETF inflows, with $385 million entering spot Bitcoin funds on May 27 alone.

The ETF tailwind marked a shift in investor sentiment as markets weighed improving macro conditions and renewed risk appetite. Ethereum ETFs followed suit, recording seven days of consecutive inflows totaling $38.77 million during the same period.
Short-Term Profit-Taking Slows Bitcoin’s Momentum Near Highs
Bitcoin price recent rally has triggered profit-taking among short-term holders, contributing to a temporary stall near the $109,000 level. Bitfinex, in a May 28 market update, warned that the current phase may lead to either consolidation or a minor pullback.
“This phase could provide a healthier base for the next leg higher,” the firm stated.
On-chain data from Bitfinex showed over $11.4 billion in realized profits by wallets active within 155 days. These addresses have an average realized price of $95,781, marking gains of 13.72% at current levels. Historically, such selling pressure from short-term holders has often preceded local tops.
Bitfinex analysts characterized the market as “short-term range-bound,” suggesting a lack of strong directional bias.
CryptoQuant analyst Amr Taha pointed to two recent liquidation waves that flushed out overleveraged short-term traders. One was triggered below $111,000, liquidating $97 million in longs, followed by a second wipeout of $88 million after the price broke under $109,000.

As short-term traders sold under pressure, long-term holders (LTHs) stepped in. Realized cap for LTHs surpassed $28 billion, a level last seen in April. Taha said these investors have been quietly accumulating, using volatility to strengthen their positions.
“Rather than being shaken out by short-term volatility, they see these dips as accumulation opportunities,” he noted.
Altcoins Bleed While BTC Holds Range; Q3 Poses Macro Threat
Crypto trader Altcoin Sherpa summarized the market mood bluntly on May 27: “If BTC breaks 110K, we’re going to send pretty hard.” Until then, Sherpa predicted altcoins would likely “chop and slightly bleed down.”
Bitcoin’s dominance remains elevated as altcoins underperform. Market observers attribute this to capital rotation into Bitcoin ETFs and uncertainty surrounding U.S. Federal Reserve policy.

The macro backdrop adds more complexity. With the Federal Reserve set to announce its next interest rate decision on June 18, investors remain cautious. Rates have held steady between 4.25% and 4.50%, but Fed Chair Jerome Powell has offered little clarity on future cuts.
Historically, Bitcoin has struggled during Q3. According to CoinGlass, Q3 has averaged just 6.03% returns since 2013 — the lowest among all quarters. Q2, by comparison, averaged 27.25%. Analysts say this seasonality reflects lower liquidity and weaker institutional engagement during the summer months.
ETF Premium and Low Volatility Signal Maturing Market
Still, some metrics paint a more optimistic long-term picture. Bitfinex analysts emphasized Bitcoin’s low volatility, ETF bid strength, and spot premium as signs of a maturing asset.
These structural indicators, they said, suggest “eventual continuation once macro clarity improves.” The long-term thesis hinges on sustained demand from ETFs and a gradual reduction in short-term selling pressure.
The bullish case rests on Bitcoin’s price ability to stay above key support near $95,000 while absorbing realized profits from recent holders. A break above $111,970 with volume could shift the momentum into another leg higher.
