- Historically, Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market have experienced significant rallies since December 25.
- The upcoming expiration of $18 Billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum options contracts on December 27 could introduce considerable volatility.
- Meanwhile, VanEck maintains a positive outlook on Bitcoin’s future, setting a target price of $180,000 in the long run.
After reaching an all-time high of $108,000 last week, Bitcoin has seen a significant correction, falling over 15% and hitting a new December low earlier today. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $94,225, down 1% with a market cap of $1.86 Trillion, amid a renewed selloff.
The recent drop has raised doubts about the possibility of a “Santa Claus rally”. This rally, historically, has brought strong gains during the holiday season in the years leading up to market cycle peaks. Despite a slight recovery to $94,000, Bitcoin is still down by over 10% in the past week.
With 2024 drawing to a close, all focus has converged on Bitcoin. Will the holiday season spark a rally, or is this the beginning of a deeper downturn? Keep reading to know what’s in store for Bitcoin.
Amid Decling Bitcoin Price Analyst Drops Optimism
The recent dip in Bitcoin’s price following its all-time high last week has dampened expectations of a major rally in the near future.
However, some experts are still optimistic. A crypto trader, Mister Crypto, highlighted Bitcoin’s historical performance, pointing out strong rallies between Christmas and New Year in 2016 and 2020. Both these years preceded market cycle peaks. He expressed optimism on Twitter, curious to see if Bitcoin will repeat this trend once again.

A recent CoinGecko study further supports this possibility. It has revealed that between 2014 and 2023, Bitcoin and the broader crypto market experienced a “Santa Claus rally” eight out of ten times after Christmas.
During these rallies, the crypto market cap saw gains ranging from 0.7% to 11.8% from December 27 to January 2. This pattern has led many to anticipate a similar rally this year.
That said, not every year follows this trend. In 2021, for example, Bitcoin had already fallen by 26% by Christmas and continued its decline throughout 2022.
Despite these variations, many remain optimistic about Bitcoin’s future, anticipating a strong 2025 following the typical four-year market cycle.
Although recent dips have shaken investor confidence, the cyclical nature of crypto markets keeps hope for a rebound alive.
Will Bitcoin Win Hearts of Investors in December’s Final Week By a Santa Rally?
As 2024 draws to a close, all eyes are on Bitcoin’s next move: will it rebound or continue to struggle?
While the recent price drop has not followed the typical pattern of a “Santa Claus rally,” several upcoming events could stir volatility and impact Bitcoin’s price. On December 27, approximately $18 Billion in Bitcoin and Ether options contracts will expire, potentially triggering significant price fluctuations.
Similarly, Bitcoin’s social sentiment reached its lowest point of the year on December 22, which could be a sign that a recovery is on the horizon. Historically, Bitcoin’s performance around Christmas has been unpredictable, with some years seeing gains and others witnessing declines.
Additionally, throughout December, Bitcoin has generally provided positive returns. Moreover, betting on the full month of December has, on average, been more profitable than focusing solely on the holiday rally.
Institutional interest in Bitcoin is also on the rise, as highlighted in a recent report by VanEck, which maintains a long-term price target of $180,000. While dips are expected along the way, the growing institutional support offers optimism for Bitcoin’s future.

With these factors in play, there’s still hope that Bitcoin could surprise investors in the final days of December.
