Wrapped Bitcoin’s Coinbase Era Ends: Exchange Axes Support
  • Coinbase will halt trading of WBTC on December 19, 2024, to adhere to its listing criteria.
  • The platform has switched WBTC order books to limit-only mode to ensure a seamless transition ahead of the delisting.
  • Following the delisting, users can still withdraw their WBTC tokens, with Coinbase guaranteeing indefinite withdrawal support.

Coinbase, the San Francisco-based crypto platform, recently revealed a significant decision regarding Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC). The company will suspend WBTC trading on December 19, 2024.

WBTC is the largest tokenized form of Bitcoin, traded across Ethereum and other blockchains. It provides Bitcoin liquidity to the broader cryptocurrency market and is fully backed by Bitcoin on a one-to-one basis.

How & Why This Move Displayed By Coinbase?

The exchange explained that the move resulted from its regular assessment of assets to maintain adherence to its listing requirements. WBTC order books have been switched to limit-only mode to ensure a smooth transition.

“We regularly monitor the assets on our exchange to ensure they meet our listing standards. Based on our most recent review, Coinbase will suspend trading for wBTC (wBTC) on December 19, 2024, on or around 12pm ET,” the company wrote on X.

“We have moved our wBTC order books to limit-only mode. Limit orders can be placed and canceled, and matches may occur,” the company said, adding that users can still move their wBTC tokens out of the exchange even after it is delisted.

Users can still withdraw their tokens after the delisting of Wrapped Bitcoin on Coinbase. Coinbase has promised to provide indefinite withdrawal support, ensuring continued access to users’ funds.

This decision reflects the company’s focus on user security and maintaining high-quality assets as the market evolves. Additionally, This move aligns with rising concerns over the increasingly complicated governance structure of the WBTC protocol.

The official Wrapped Bitcoin account on X (formerly Twitter) also expressed surprise at Coinbase’s decision. It acknowledged its unexpected reaction to the news.

This shift has attracted attention, particularly since BiTGlobal recently entered a joint venture with BitGo. It is the primary custodian of WBTC. The partnership has gained visibility due to its connection with TRON founder Justin Sun. Justin is a controversial figure in the crypto space.

Sun is expected to gain more control over the WBTC protocol. Although the collaboration was presented as a move to enhance “geographical resilience.”. This has raised concerns within the industry.

Coinbase Suspends WBTC Support Amid Governance Concerns

Both BitGo and BiTGlobal have described their partnership as a significant shift in the WBTC custody model. Previously, BitGo controlled the primary keys for Wrapped Bitcoin with transparency and oversight.

However, concerns have emerged within the industry due to the involvement of entities linked to Justin Sun in the governance of WBTC. MakerDAO and Aave have taken precautionary steps within the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector.

MakerDAO voted to restrict the use of WBTC as collateral for the stablecoin DAI. On the other hand, Aave has pledged to monitor developments closely.

These actions reflect broader industry skepticism about the ability of the new governance structure to maintain the stability of Wrapped Bitcoin. As Sun’s increasing influence sparks debate, Coinbase’s recent decision is considered strategic.

The market capitalization of Coinbase’s newly launched tokenized Bitcoin alternative, cbBTC, has risen. However, the competition in the tokenized Bitcoin space remains fierce. Moreover, Sun’s involvement has faced scrutiny from Coinbase and other players.

Additionally, Coinbase introduced cbBTC on the Ethereum and Base blockchains in mid-September. It was later integrated with Solana.

According to data from Dune Analytics, there are currently 15,070 cbBTC tokens in circulation. The circulation is distributed across three networks: 82% on Base, 16.3% on Ethereum, and the remainder on Solana.

The delisting of WBTC represented a significant turning point in Coinbase’s strategy. It signaled a shift toward promoting its derivative token, cbBTC. As the exchange refines its product offerings, this move highlights its commitment to driving the adoption of its proprietary innovations.

Coinbase Urges cbBTC as a More Secure Bitcoin Choice

With the launch of cbBTC by Coinbase and Kraken’s tokenized Bitcoin offerings, competition in the tokenized Bitcoin market has intensified. Coinbase claims that cbBTC meets stringent standards.

According to Dune data, this positions it as a safer alternative to WBTC, with its market capitalization now reaching $1.307 billion. In contrast, Justin Sun’s Poloniex platform has also introduced a larger competing tokenized Bitcoin product.

Critics, including Sun, have criticized Coinbase’s proof of reserves transparency, arguing that it falls short of industry standards. However, Sun’s platforms have faced similar criticisms, casting doubt on his claims. This delisting decision is poised to reshape the landscape of tokenized Bitcoin products.

At the same time, Wrapped Bitcoin’s market reputation may be limited by ongoing governance changes. Coinbase’s move could catalyze greater adoption of alternative tokenized assets like cbBTC. This could potentially attract more investors to these newer options.
