Key Insights
- Whales are shorting Bitcoin heavily near the $88,000 resistance zone.
- On-chain metrics flash bearish despite ETF inflows and rising trading volumes.
- Bitcoin must close above $88,400 weekly to maintain bullish momentum.
Bitcoin (BTC) has encountered strong resistance from whales at the $88K level. Bearish metrics are increasing, adding pressure to the current price movement. Bulls must push for a clear breakout above $90K to regain control of the market trend.
Bitcoin Rally Hits Turbulence at Whale Short Zone
On March 25, BTC price traded close to $88,000. Traders questioned whether the recent upside momentum would be sustained.

Data from Alphractal and CryptoQuant showed that whales began entering short positions around $88,000. The move aligned with a drop in the “Whale Position Sentiment” metric.
This metric monitors large trades and open interest in the market. Alphractal CEO Joao Wedson stated that major players had closed long positions. He also confirmed that they had shifted to a bearish outlook.
“When the Whale Position Sentiment starts to decline, even if the price temporarily rises, it is a strong signal that whales are entering short positions,” Alphractal stated on X.
Bitcoin hit a local high of $88,765 on March 24 but failed to reclaim the $89,000 resistance. The lack of follow-through above this level raised concerns about a temporary top-forming in the short term.
On-chain Data Flashes Red as the Price Stalls
CryptoQuant’s latest dashboard revealed that 8 of 10 BTC metrics turned bearish. Indicators excluding stablecoin liquidity and technical signal metrics flipped red. This pointed toward reduced bullish strength.

CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju warned of a challenging market phase ahead. He predicted 6 to 12 months of sideways or bearish price movement. He attributed this to the weakening trend of key on-chain signals despite brief price recoveries.
At the same time, IntoTheBlock data revealed $424 million in net Bitcoin outflows from exchanges between March 18–24. This may signal that some investors accumulate, even as others take profits.
Volume Spikes, Sentiment Recovers From Fear Lows
BTC trading volume jumped by 50% in the past 24 hours, reflecting renewed activity around the $88,000 level. While some traders sold into strength, the broader market appeared to regain confidence.

The Fear and Greed Index rose from a record low of 17 to 34, showing that sentiment has shifted toward neutral. Still, this remains far from greedy territory, indicating that investors remain cautious.

ETF inflows also supported the market structure. According to Santiment, March 14 began a seven-day positive streak in Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows. This was the first such streak in 2025, reflecting renewed institutional interest.
Bullish Momentum Slows Ahead of Weekly Close
Despite the retrace from $88,765, BTC has held the $86,000–$88,000 zone for over 24 hours. Analyst Alex Clary observed a bullish divergence in the Relative Strength Index (RSI). A V-shaped recovery accompanied this observance.

Clary argued that Bitcoin’s structure looks poised for a breakout above the $90,000 resistance. A push above that level could trigger an 8–14% rally toward $95,000–$100,000.
However, not all analysts are convinced. Rekt Capital noted that BTC must close above $88,400 and $93,500 on the weekly chart to resume its uptrend. Failing that, the asset risks entering another phase of downside deviation.
“This was the exact confirmation that Bitcoin needed back in mid-2021 when the price crashed -55%,” Rekt Capital said.
Crowd Optimism Could Signal Caution
Retail sentiment on social media has also shifted. Santiment reported a surge in bullish Bitcoin predictions. Price targets now range between $100,000 and $159,000. The firm warned that such spikes in optimism often precede local tops.
“Crowd sentiment always moves in the opposite direction of the market,” Santiment cautioned in a post.

Bitcoin open interest has also increased sharply since early March. According to Coinglass, total BTC open interest grew by 19%, rising from a YTD low of 541.52 to 644.55 contracts. This suggested that traders become more active again, betting on further volatility.
Short-term Outlook Hinges on $88K Reclaim
BTC’s failure to break above $89,000 raises short-term risks, especially with whales actively shorting. ETF inflows and exchange outflows point to accumulation in the market.
However, bearish on-chain signals present a contrasting narrative. Additionally, overly optimistic crowd sentiment adds to the mixed outlook for Bitcoin’s trajectory.
Bitcoin needs a clean weekly close above $88,400 and follow-through beyond $90,000. Until then, traders remain cautious, watching whether the next move traps buyers—or sellers.
