US and China Trade News Will Impact the Dow Jones and S&P 500 Index

The main catalyst for the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 indices this week will be any news on the US-China trade conflict, which triggered the sell-off on Friday.

Most of the sell-off happened after Donald Trump threatened to impose 130% tariffs on goods from China. He also warned that he would ban some critical software made by US companies from being sold to China.

His threat came after China announced new measures targeting the US and its allies. For example, the country unveiled measures to like the export of rare earth materials, an industry it dominates today. It also launched an investigation into Qualcomm and announced a tariff on US ships docking on China.

The Dow Jones and the S&P 500 Indices are rising as investors bet that new threats will not result in a major escalation. Also, market participants expect that the two sides will reach an agreement during the APEC meeting in South Korea later this month when Donald Trump and Xi Jinping will meet.

Artificial Intelligence Growth

The primary driver for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones has been the ongoing artificial intelligence spending, which has been in a strong upward trend over the past few years. This growth has helped to mint several trillion-dollar companies like NVIDIA, Broadcom, and Taiwan Semiconductor.

There have been major announcements in the AI industry over the past few months, including the $100 billion partnership between Nvidia and OpenAI, as well as last week’s partnership between AMD and OpenAI.

One major issue is that some investors have started predicting that the market is now in an AI bubble that may pop in the coming months.

The main AI news this week is expected to come from ASML and Taiwan Semiconductor, which will publish their financial results. ASML is a major player in the AI industry as it is a monopoly that manufactures lithography machines that are used in chips manufacturing.

TSMC, on the other hand, is the world’s largest chip manufacturer. Strong results will be a sign that demand for chips continued rising in the third quarter.

Earnings Season is Starting on Tuesday

The other key news from the Dow Jones and S&P 500 will come from the United States, where the earnings season is set to start on Tuesday.

The earnings season begins when major American companies, such as JPMorgan and Citi, among others, release their quarterly results.

Most companies in the two indices are expected to publish their results in the coming weeks, with analysts anticipating solid earnings growth. The average earnings growth estimate among analysts is 13%, with most sectors expected to have strong metrics.

Federal Reserve Speakers

The next important catalyst for the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones are statements from top Federal Reserve officials, who will share their views on the state of the economy and their outlook for interest rate cuts.

The headline speaker will be Jerome Powell, the Chair of the Federal Reserve, who will deliver his first public statement since the US government shutdown began. Other officials, such as Stephen Moran, Raphael Bostic, Michele Bowman, and Christopher Waller, will also speak.

Analysts believe that the Federal Reserve will deliver its second interest rate cut of the year later this month as signs that the US economy is softening remain. One of the main signs is a report by ADP that revealed that the economy lost 36,000 jobs in September.

The Dow Jones Index and the S&P 500 are expected to have more major news this week, including reports on the government shutdown and the latest developments in Israel, where all hostages have been released.
