Whales Move 185K BTC as Trump’s Tariffs Shake Bitcoin Path

Bitcoin’s $115K rebound masked shifting dynamics in October. Whales increased transfers to Binance amid Trump’s tariff threats on China, with on-chain data showing retail retreat and institutional accumulation at record highs.

Bitcoin Holds $115K as Whales Dominate Market Moves

Bitcoin BTC traded near $115,440 on Oct. 27 after a volatile month shaped by politics and whale repositioning. The rebound followed Donald Trump’s trade rhetoric on China, which stirred market sentiment and triggered large Bitcoin transfers across exchanges.

According to XWIN Research Japan, Trump’s tariff threats and policy reversals repeatedly swayed Bitcoin’s trajectory through October. When he warned of 100% tariffs on Chinese imports on Oct. 10, Bitcoin dropped 8.4% to $104,800, as the Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL) index dipped below 0.50, reflecting heightened fear among traders.

By Oct. 13, Trump softened his tone. Bitcoin recovered to the mid-$110,000s, but renewed tariffs and export controls on Oct. 14 sent prices back down. The NUPL indicator fell again before improving after the White House confirmed a Trump–Xi summit for Oct. 30.

As optimism grew about potential tariff reversals, BTC stabilized above $113,000, with NUPL climbing back to 0.52, a signal of renewed investor confidence.

Bitcoin BTC Retail Holdings Flat, Institutional Control Deepens

Recent data from CryptosRus revealed a significant shift in Bitcoin ownership structure. Retail holdings, represented by smaller wallets, have remained “flat to slightly declining” since mid-2024. In contrast, large investors steadily increased their positions, now at new all-time highs.

“In previous cycles, large wallets typically distributed near peaks,” the outlet noted. “This time, they’re accumulating while retail supply shrinks.”

The shift underscores a deeper institutionalization of Bitcoin ownership, amplified by exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows and expanding corporate participation. Analysts observed that ownership consolidation among whales is now outpacing retail adoption, a reversal of the 2021 dynamic when retail traders drove the market’s speculative frenzy.

ETF inflows in 2025, especially in the United States and Asia, reinforced this transition. Institutional portfolios have begun holding Bitcoin as a macro hedge, dampening speculative volatility but concentrating liquidity in fewer hands.

Binance Sees 185K BTC Inflows in October

Exchange data reflected the same structural movement. Binance recorded 185,000 BTC in inflows during October the highest since early summer, according to internal data cited in your sources.

Whales accounted for 24.7% of those inflows, equivalent to roughly 45,000 BTC, the largest ratio since July. Historically, such whale activity often precedes derivatives repositioning rather than direct liquidation.

The inflows came amid heightened volatility. Bitcoin failed to drop below $100,000, despite multiple price swings following Trump’s comments. Market observers described these transfers as technical adjustments, not broad sell-offs.

Some traders interpret rising inflows as a precursor to potential selling pressure. However, others argue the behavior suggests whales are rebalancing ahead of new macro data or futures expiries.

The movement aligns with earlier patterns where whales moved coins during uncertain political or economic conditions, maintaining liquidity flexibility while awaiting market direction.

Technical Setup Points to Resistance Ahead

Bitcoin trading within a descending pitchfork channel, with short-term resistance near $116,000–$118,000. The structure implies continued sideways movement unless bulls reclaim higher ground.

The same chart highlighted multiple short targets between $110,000 and $99,000, aligning with technical take-profit zones visible on higher time frames. The lower channel boundary, near $104,000, remains a crucial area for traders monitoring downside risk.

At current levels, Bitcoin’s risk-to-reward profile remains tight. IncomeSharks noted on X that the On-Balance Volume (OBV) indicator was “looking to reclaim support,” signaling cautious optimism but little room for aggressive positioning. “I’m still window shopping,” the trader wrote, emphasizing that crypto equities offered higher short-term potential.

Whales Reposition as Market Awaits Trump–Xi Summit

As the Trump–Xi meeting approaches on Oct. 30, traders are bracing for renewed volatility. Political headlines have once again become direct catalysts for Bitcoin price swings, merging geopolitics with on-chain sentiment.

On-chain metrics like NUPL and exchange inflows suggest that large holders are not exiting but reallocating, positioning themselves for potential post-summit clarity. Retail traders, meanwhile, appear sidelined, contributing to the flattening of smaller wallet activity.

Analysts say this transition marks a new phase in Bitcoin’s market psychology—less retail speculation, more institutional calibration. The whales appear to be steering the ship while smaller traders watch from the sidelines.

With Bitcoin holding firm above $115,000, near-term direction may depend as much on Trump’s trade diplomacy as on technical setups. For now, the data points to one clear reality: the balance of power in Bitcoin ownership has changed, and the market is learning to live with it.
