Key Factors Driving Current Crypto Market Rally & Investor Optimism

A cautious crypto market rally is underway this week, with Bitcoin and most altcoins being in the green. Bitcoin rebounded from last week’s low of $80,000 to $87,000 today. On the other hand, the market cap of all coins tracked by CoinMarketCap jumped to over $3 trillion.

Crypto Market Rally Happens as Fear and Greed Index Plunges

The crypto rally is partly driven by sentiment shifts. The Fear and Greed Index has dropped into the extreme fear zone. This signals that investors may see current prices as buying opportunities. It initially dropped to the year-to-date low of 8 on Saturday, and has now recovered a bit to 15.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index is an important tool that looks at several metrics like volatility and momentum. It normally drops when sentiment in the crypto industry is plummeting.

In most cases, crypto market prices normally drop when the index is in a downward trend. Also, they rise when it is in an uptrend. However, it is common for prices to start rebounding when the index moves to the extreme fear zone.

A good example came in April. The index dropped to extreme fear as Bitcoin fell below $80,000. Bitcoin price then rebounded and hit a new record high a month later.

The crypto market often rallies during negative coverage. Major outlets like Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times publish critical headlines. Traders respond by buying, and prices move higher.

Most recently, these publications have written several negative headlines about the industry. This includes the ongoing Bitcoin ETF outflows and the fact that the market has shed over $1.2 trillion in value.

Polymarket Federal Reserve Interest Rate Cut Odds Jump

Another reason for the crypto rally is trader sentiment. Polymarket traders are betting on an interest rate cut at the December meeting. As shown below, the odds of a cut have jumped from 22% on November 20 to over 80% today.

If this happens, it will be the third interest rate cut of the year. This will bring the benchmark rate from the current range of between 3.75% and 4% to between 3.50% and 3.75%.

Odds of a rate cut in December jumped after statements from two officials: John Williams, Mary Daly, and Christopher Waller. Waller’s statement was notable because he is shortlisted to replace Jerome Powell. Powell’s term ends next year, making Waller a key candidate.

Historically, the crypto market performs strongly when the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates. It also rallies when Fed officials adopt a dovish tone.

Crypto Prices Boosted by the Stock Market Surge

The crypto market rally also happened as the US and global stock markets rebounded on Monday. This erases some of the losses they made last week.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index jumped by 600 points on Monday. At the same time, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones jumped by over 1%.

This performance also happened in Asia. There, top indices like the Nikkei 225 and the Hang Seng jumped by over 1%.

The rebounding stock market is a sign that investors are embracing a risk-on sentiment. This often boosts risky assets like cryptocurrencies.

Rising Leverage in the Crypto Market

The other notable catalyst for the crypto market rally is that investors have started to deploy leverage. It is normally a bullish aspect.

CoinGlass data shows futures open interest in crypto rose to $128 billion. This is a sharp increase from the month’s low of $125 billion.

Rising open interest and bearish liquidations are normally a good catalyst for the crypto market. It is the opposite of one of the top reasons for the recent crypto crash.

Still, it is too early to predict whether the crypto market crash has ended and that a new rally is starting. Besides, most coins remain below their moving averages and their Supertrend indicators.

Also, there is a high likelihood that the ongoing crypto market rally is part of a dead-cat bounce. That is a brief rebound followed by a crash.
