Bitcoin Price Surges Past $82K: Fear & Greed Index Hits A Fear

Key Insights:

  • Fear & Greed Index drops to 18, signaling extreme market fear.
  • Bitcoin rebounded past $82K after hitting a multi-month low of $78K.
  • Analysts predict a bullish reversal as financial conditions ease.

Bitcoin price has staged a comeback. It has surpassed $82,000 after reaching a multi-month low of $78,197. However, despite this positive development for BTC, the cryptocurrency industry remains in chaos.

Fear grips investors as the Fear & Greed Index falls to 18 points, its lowest level since August 2024. This massive dread coincided with a 38% increase in the Volatility Index (VIX) last week.

Market Sentiment Plummets: Fear & Greed Index & Volatility Surge, Bitcoin Price Shows Resilience

The latest crash in market sentiment is eerily similar to previous bottoms in crypto history. Per The Kobeissi Letter, the current Fear & Greed Index rating of 18 is the second-lowest since the 2022 bear market. Historically, such levels indicate capitulation, often preceding a market reversal.

At the same time, the U.S. Volatility Index (VIX) has skyrocketed by 38%, suggesting a surge in market uncertainty. However, the recent bounce in Bitcoin price could hint that the worst may already be over.

Bitcoin Price Rebound Fueled by PCE Inflation Data

One of the key drivers behind the recovery of BTC is the latest Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Index report. The PCE data for January, the Federal Reserve’s favored inflation index, came in at 0.3% (MoM) and 2.5% (YoY), as expected.

This was the first decline in PCE inflation since September 2024, offering some relief to traders fearing prolonged monetary tightening. Markets reacted positively, with U.S. dollar strength cooling off from its two-week high of 107.45.

The dollar’s weakness and the easing inflation outlook pushed risk assets, including Bitcoin price, higher. Still, despite this relief, Fed rate cut expectations remain essentially unchanged.

CME Group’s FedWatch Tool showed only a 5.5% probability of a rate cut in March. This meant that investors may have to wait longer for an easing cycle to begin.

Financial Conditions Are Shifting: Is a Crypto Rally Ahead?

According to Julien Bittel, head of macro research at Global Macro Investor, the worst may soon be over. He argues that the ongoing crypto slump directly results from Q4’s aggressive financial tightening. However, he sees signs of a turnaround.

However, he expects this cycle to reverse soon, pointing to easing financial conditions in recent months. Factors such as a weakening dollar, declining bond yields, and lower oil prices indicate an impending recovery.

With macro tightening fully reflected in the $80,000 BTC price level, traders are now watching for signs of a recovery. If financial conditions continue to ease, Bitcoin price could regain its bullish momentum in the coming weeks.
