Gold ETFs Outpace Bitcoin Flows As Investors Seek Safety

Gold ETFs have overtaken the Bitcoin funds in annual net inflows, a sign of an apparent safety bid under macro uncertainty. Charts reveal that the Bitcoin ETF flows have leveled off during the last month as the gold funds keep drawing in capital.

The split occurs as investors await clarity on the policy by next week’s Federal Open Market Committee.

Gold ETFs Flows Tilt Toward Lower-Volatility Assets

The year-to-date chart on net ETF flows puts U. S. equity ETFs well ahead of U. S. bond funds. In the store-of-value cohort, gold has surpassed Bitcoin following a weak competition throughout the year.

The visual further marks that the net flows of Bitcoin have not changed a lot in the last 30 days, but gold has, de-banking market expectations. This suggests that allocations will trend to so-called defensive assets as risk appetite becomes softer.

Bar lengths suggest that U.S. stock ETFs have already accumulated more than $100 billion of net inflows this year. U.S. bonds are a close second with an even smaller but again huge clip. The bar of gold has now slightly surpassed that of Bitcoin, indicating a lead in cumulative inflows.

Ethernet is later in the list with relatively small net additions. The chart highlights a market that is between risk-on and risk-off. This fact could be used to justify why flows in the precious-metal and the crypto categories have been divergent over the past few weeks.

Gold is pulling away since investors are considering the Federal Reserve outlook. There has been a reported stagnation of Bitcoin flows, which has been termed fundamentally flat during the last month. That gave room to the bullion funds to pass over.

Macro Backdrop Ahead of the Fed Meeting

Market conditions can explain the shift. Gold is on the way to a fourth straight weekly increase on hopes that the Federal Reserve may soon reduce interest rates in the United States.

At the end of the week, the prices were trading around $3,650 an ounce, 1.7% higher in 5-session trading following a new record earlier. Silver, traditionally linked to gold, hit a high of over $42 an ounce, the highest it has been since 2011.

U.S. data indicated that consumer sentiment was at its lowest level in May, and a second consecutive increase in long-term inflation expectations. Traders are still pricing in a reduction in the rate at the next policy session. It has long been used to support non-yielding groups of assets, like bullion.

The strength of gold this year has been broad-based. The metal has increased by almost 40% by 2025, beating key equity indices such as S/P 500. Central bank buys, geopolitical risk, and unwavering investment demand helped the rally.

Another possible source of ETF demand is indicated in policy discussions in India. The regulators are also thinking of relaxing the laws that categorize gold ETFs as alternative assets. That restricts such holdings to 5% of pension funds.

Indian pension funds have approximately $177 billion, and they seek more avenues of returns as retirement funds continue to grow.

The industry consultation with the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority also reportedly requests a change in laws affecting real estate and infrastructure trusts. The authorities have not yet made a declaration, but drafting language is reported to be under consideration.
