Bitcoin Price Slid After $7.6B Options Expiry Hit Monthly Settlement

Bitcoin price fell on Jan. 30 as 91,000 options contracts expired for Bitcoin (BTC). Wu Blockchain said the expiry carried $7.6 billion notional value and a 0.48 put-call ratio.

Greeks.live said the same expiry marked the first monthly settlement after annual rollover. It said options equaled about 25% of total open interest, totaling nearly $9 billion.

Wu Blockchain said the 0.48 put-call ratio showed call-heavy positioning into expiry. Traders still faced downside risk because spot fell during the settlement window.

Greeks.live said call options dominated overwhelmingly across the expiring open interest. It still warned that hedging demand leaned bearish despite that call skew.

That timing mattered because Bitcoin price already trended lower since Jan. 29, Greeks.live noted. The account said panic returned after a brief respite, extending last quarter’s decline.

Bitcoin Price Faced Maximum Pain And Support Tests

Wu Blockchain said the maximum pain point sat at $90,000 for Bitcoin options. That level framed dealer hedging flows as spot traded below it.

TradingView data from Bitstamp showed Bitcoin price near $82,735 at the snapshot. The session printed a high near $84,599 and a low near $81,040.

That range kept BTC above the $80,000 psychological level highlighted by Greeks.live. Greeks.live said that level acted as strong support during the selloff.

TradingView’s auto Fibonacci tool placed the 1.0 level near $84,398. It placed the 1.618 extension near $76,030, below current trading.

TradingView retracement labels placed $87,829 near the 0.786 level. They placed $89,571 near the 0.618 level, overhead resistance.

BTC briefly pushed into that band in mid-January on the chart. It then reversed and returned toward the $80,000 area.

The same chart showed the relative strength index near 31.13. That reading reflected heavy selling pressure over recent sessions.

Bitcoin Price Volatility Rose As Traders Rolled And Hedged

Greeks.live said implied volatility rose to yearly highs for both majors. It put Bitcoin’s primary implied volatility near 45%, while Ether’s stood near 60%.

Higher implied volatility often lifted options premiums, raising hedging costs for traders. Greeks.live linked the move to persistent rollover demand.

Greeks.live said the rollover followed an annual cycle reset for many desks. That setup concentrated hedging adjustments into the first monthly settlement.

Rising implied volatility also implied wider daily ranges for Bitcoin price. Greeks.live said traders paid up for protection as uncertainty rose.

It also said block trades and transaction volumes stayed elevated this cycle. The account tied that activity to traders shifting exposure across expiries.

Those mechanics mattered because calls still dominated, Greeks.live said. Even so, it said traders showed the greatest demand for bearish hedging.

That mix suggested caution rather than conviction in upside exposure. Traders rolled positions while protecting downside around key spot levels.

Bitcoin And Ether Options Also Expired

Wu Blockchain said 435,000 Ether options contracts expired the same day. It said the Ether expiry carried $1.19 billion notional value.

Wu Blockchain also said Ether’s put-call ratio measured 0.68, with maximum pain at $3,000. That configuration kept Ether under its own max pain level.

Greeks.live said Ether held support near $2,500 during the downtrend. It tied that support to the same risk-off shift hitting Bitcoin.

Ether’s own expiry added another stress point for risk books. Greeks.live said $2,500 acted as support as volatility climbed.

The combined expiries concentrated hedging flows into a single session. Greeks.live said that concentration amplified short-term volatility across both markets.

Near-Term Outlook Focused On Levels, Not Narratives

Bitcoin BTC stayed sensitive to dealer positioning around $90,000 maximum pain, Wu Blockchain said. Spot traded far below that level, limiting bullish relief.

Greeks.live said market makers and active traders held substantial cash reserves. It said that cash signaled strong trading intent during volatile conditions.

TradingView levels suggested $84,398 as a nearby pivot for Bitcoin price. The chart’s retracement band also marked $87,829 and $89,571 above.

A break below $80,000 would refocus attention on the $76,030 extension level. TradingView’s Fibonacci tool plotted that level as the next downside area.

Traders watched liquidity closely. Greeks.live noted cash stayed ready nearby too.

Greeks.live framed the move as an aftershock rather than a new crisis. The next sessions depended on whether support held under rollover pressure.
