Key Insights:
- Bitcoin open interest remains elevated near $96.2 billion.
- Leverage ratio nears 2025 peak, signaling volatile trading conditions.
- Selling pressure from long-term holders shows signs of weakening.
Bitcoin’s $96.2B derivatives market shows rising leveraged bets as Binance volumes spike and ETFs fuel volatility. Long-term holders slow selling, but risks of liquidation loom near all-time highs.
$96.2B Open Interest Signals Heavy Leverage Ahead
Bitcoin’s derivatives market heated up again. According to Glassnode, open interest (OI) in Bitcoin futures and options stood at $96.2 billion—down from a $114 billion peak, but still well above 2022 levels. This growing leverage base continued to influence each time Bitcoin (BTC) tested historical price ceilings.

The recent rise in speculative exposure followed the approval of U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Jan. 2024. Since then, 30-day OI volatility has surged. Glassnode noted this marked a departure from the more stable derivatives activity seen throughout 2023.
Spot ETFs Fuel a New Era of Volatility
The entrance of major institutional players via spot Bitcoin ETFs reshaped derivatives behavior. Glassnode attributed the shift to a market increasingly driven by leverage rather than long-term accumulation.
The Realized Cap Leverage Ratio—an indicator tracking the ratio of speculative value to realized market value—stood at 10.2%. That placed it within the top 10.8% of trading days since 2018. The metric suggested growing speculative activity that could amplify price action in either direction.
BTC traded near $103,000, holding above key support levels. However, Glassnode warned that such high leverage levels increased the likelihood of abrupt liquidations, especially as Bitcoin hovered near all-time highs.
Binance Derivatives Surge to 2025 Highs
Activity on Binance underpinned much of this speculation. In May, Binance recorded $1.7 trillion in futures trading volume—the highest monthly total of 2025 so far. That figure dwarfed volumes on competing exchanges, suggesting most trader participation remained concentrated on the platform.

Derivatives metrics pointed to a market on edge. CryptoQuant data showed the BTC-USDT estimated leverage ratio continued to climb. The figure neared its early 2025 peak, suggesting traders increased position sizes while price volatility stayed subdued.
Analyst Boris Vest noted that short positions dominated in the $100,000–$110,000 range. However, funding rates remained neutral, hinting at balanced sentiment. Vest suggested that larger entities may have been quietly accumulating in this zone while retail traders leaned bearish.
Long-Term Holders Pause, But Don’t Exit
Despite rising leverage and short-term bets, long-term holder behavior showed little panic. According to on-chain researcher Darkfost, Coin Days Destroyed (CDD)—a metric that tracks the age of spent coins—declined after a modest uptick.

The 30-day moving average of CDD stood at 500,000, well below the 800,000–1 million range observed in Jan. 2025 and March 2024. This pointed to weakening selling pressure from long-term holders.
“CDD helps identify shifts in long-term conviction,” Darkfost explained. “Right now, we see neutral activity—some profit-taking, but nothing aggressive.”

The cooling in CDD aligned with the shift away from crypto-margined collateral since the FTX collapse in 2022. Glassnode noted that stablecoin-margined positions now dominated open interest, reducing systemic risk and dampening collateral volatility during rapid price moves.
Risk Builds Near All-Time Highs
While structural changes since 2022 have reduced the impact of cascading liquidations, analysts remained cautious. The Realized Cap Leverage Ratio’s current spike, coupled with record Binance volumes and a growing leverage ratio, created ideal conditions for both a breakout and a wipeout.
With Bitcoin stuck in a tight range near $103,000 and traders increasing leverage on both sides, the market appeared primed for a volatility event. Whether that favored bulls or bears would depend on positioning dynamics as Bitcoin approached the psychological $111,800 resistance.
The next few weeks may determine whether Bitcoin’s leveraged bets fuel new highs—or another painful reset.
